What it is

Sub-dissociative, taken at home

A low daily dose of ketamine, prescribed off-label by a licensed clinician. Your daily dose is tailored to you and is much lower than a typical in-clinic dose — designed to fit into your day.

The science

What research shows about ketamine

Unlike traditional antidepressants that target serotonin, ketamine works through a different pathway — boosting glutamate signaling to trigger neuroplasticity, your brain's natural ability to form new neural connections and repair pathways damaged by chronic stress.

“It’s the fact that I can function on such a small amount of medication instead of having to take 5–6 different things at once to manage my mental health. […] Now I take my Joyous, and it keeps me stable, productive, and full of joy! People notice the difference at work, at home, and at church. The impact it’s had on me is genuinely noticeable, and in such a positive way.”

“Before joyous, my panic attacks controlled me. Multiple times a day […] Now, I’m able to pull myself out of the panic attacks a lot quicker. I recommend this to EVERYONE struggling with depression and anxiety.”
★★★★★ Lynn H. · Trustpilot, Nov 2025
“Joyous gave me my life back after I felt hope was gone. The medicine worked so quickly and so well, it’s changed my life. I’ve been taking psychiatric medication for most of my life, and none of them have come close to what ketamine has given me. No more panic attacks, anxiety is extremely low as is depression. My mind isn’t constantly running negative thoughts and memories.”
★★★★★ Leslie W. B. · Trustpilot, Oct 2026 · Joyous gave my life back
“I had used SSRIs in the past which fell flat and made me feel worse. Ketamine therapy helped me actually get to the root of problems, recall painful experiences with grace, and manage moderate-severe depression.”

Frequently asked questions

Who is a fit for ketamine therapy?

Joyous offers provider-directed, at-home ketamine treatment prescribed off-label for depression and anxiety. Many patients also come with chronic stress and burnout, high-functioning anxiety or depression, grief, trauma, or chronic pain. A licensed clinician reviews your diagnosis, medical history, and goals to decide whether treatment is appropriate for you.

Who is NOT a fit for ketamine therapy?

Ketamine treatment may not be appropriate for people with psychosis or bipolar I, active suicidal intent, uncontrolled high blood pressure, a seizure history, a history of stroke or brain injury, pregnancy or breastfeeding, or active or recent substance use disorder. Joyous screens for these conditions before prescribing; your clinician makes the final decision. Joyous is not for emergencies. If you are in crisis, call or text 988; for an immediate emergency, call 911.

What does low-dose ketamine feel like?

Our low-dose protocol is designed to keep you present and coherent during treatment, but effects vary. After about 15 minutes you may notice a subtle calm, and some patients experience lightheadedness or feel a little “out of it” for 30 to 40 minutes. We recommend taking a moment for meditation or reflection. Over the first weeks, your clinician adjusts your dose using your daily check-ins. If the feeling isn’t right, tell your clinician; they may recommend adjusting or splitting your dose. Do not drive after a dose; follow your clinician’s instructions about when to resume driving.

How fast does ketamine therapy work?

Antidepressants are generally described as taking four to eight weeks to work. In Joyous outcomes data, among patients starting with moderate or worse depression (PHQ-9 ≥ 10) who remained in treatment, the average depression score had dropped 38% by the end of week one. The typical patient’s score was cut in half within about 16 days. That is a median among people who responded and stayed in treatment; half took longer, and reaching the PHQ-9 remission range (a score under 5) took a median of 48 days. These are self-reported scores, with no control group; individual results vary.

Does it work for anxiety and depression?

In Joyous outcomes data, 86% of patients who started with moderate or worse depression (PHQ-9 ≥ 10) cut their score in half or better within six weeks, and 54% reached the PHQ-9 remission range (a score under 5). Among patients starting with moderate or worse anxiety (GAD-7 ≥ 10), 87% cut their score in half or better within six weeks, and 59% reached the GAD-7 remission range (a score under 5). Measured among patients who stayed in treatment, using self-reported scores; no control group; individual results vary.

Is at-home ketamine safe?

At-home ketamine treatment rests on three things: a low daily dose designed to be sub-dissociative, screening by a licensed clinician before you start, and daily check-ins so your dose changes only when your clinician approves them. Treatment carries risks, and side effects can occur. Drowsiness was the most common side effect in Joyous outcomes data: about 1 in 4 patients in week one, fewer than 1 in 5 by week six. Your clinician will review risks and precautions with you. Do not drive after a dose; follow your clinician’s instructions about when to resume driving.

Can I keep taking other medications?

Many patients continue their existing antidepressant during treatment. Ketamine works through a different mechanism than SSRIs, typically much faster. It has its own potential side effects and interactions. Tell your clinician about everything you take; they will talk through whether treatment fits alongside your current medications. Never stop or change a medication without talking to your prescriber.

Is it safe to take before a therapy session?

Some patients pair their dose with a therapy session, as directed by their provider. Ask your clinician whether this is appropriate for you and how to time your dose; effects vary, and you may feel drowsy or lightheaded. For a video session, stay home afterward. Do not drive after a dose; follow your clinician’s instructions about when to resume driving. If therapy is in person, arrange for someone else to drive you.

Is it covered by insurance?

Insurance does not cover Joyous treatment. HSA and FSA funds are accepted.
